In the summer of 2020, I took a friend, a former bodyman, to Stratford, Ontario to check out a 72 Mustang. The car was advertised in Old Autos, a great publication through which I have purchased two other cars over the previous eight years. The car was also advertised on Kijiji. We looked the car over and my friend, the body guy, looked closely at the underside of the car. We found a few flaws in the body work, but nothing major.
After a road test it was time to negotiate a fair price and the deal was done. A few days later we returned with a trailer. We finished up the necessary paper work, loaded the car and headed home.
Let the problems
begin! The next order of business was replacing necessary parts. Rear brake
cylinders, master cylinder and power brake booster were some of the parts
ordered. The pandemic caused a backlog as production was down due to factories
closing or short staffed. After a two month wait, I had the last of the
parts that had been ordered.
Parts finally arrived in July and suddenly I realized that even though I felt better, I was not strong enough to do much of the work. So, back on the trailer and the car went to a local shop for an MTO safety inspection and repairs. In the meanwhile, I ordered a set of 1972 YOM (year of manufacture) licence plates. A week went
by, the needed repairs have been done and the car is on the road.
Here is a little history on our 72 Mustang. It was built in Dearborn, Michigan on January 4, 1972 and delivered to Rankin Ford Sales Ltd in London, Ontario. Rankin Ford delivered the car to the new owner, Robert Hunt Co. of London on January 19. The suggested retail price was $4767.10 with options and including 12% federal sales tax. This Mustang is 1/6401 convertibles built for the 1972 model year.
The top was down as we toured with the car club on day tours during
July, August and September. We have also attended a few cruise nights and
two car shows. I even had my "new" 1972 licence plates for the last car
show of the season.
We did two Fall Tours. The first tour was a nice drive in Prince Edward
County on a rainy day. The second Fall Tour, and also the last tour of
2021, took us north of Napanee were we enjoyed the beauty of Buttermilk
Falls.
